Piano Tuning, Servicing & Repairs

Tune & Check-up

A check up and fine tune, the bread-and-butter of the piano tech’s work.

Tuning refers to using a tuning lever to change the tension of each of the (roughly) 235 strings so that they perfectly sing at the right pitch - it’s as much an art as a science! A piano played regularly benefits from a regular tuning - usually every six months months. A piano used only occasionally should be tuned at least every 12-18 months.

My approach prioritises moving each string's tuning pin as little as possible. The less a string is disturbed, the longer it holds its pitch. This requires careful aural testing before adjusting each string, removing any guesswork. The result is a more stable, longer-lasting tuning.
Please note: only applicable to pianos last tuned less than 2 years ago. Otherwise, a pitch raise will be required (see below).

Tune & Service

Inside the piano are more than 10,000 parts and every one must be working well for the piano to play well - therefore regular servicing is essential.

For example: the keyboard and action (the bit inside with the hammers) must be regularly cleaned, lubricated and adjusted. This makes the piano easier to play and gifts the pianist greater dynamic range.

The result: a piano that plays more consistently with better repetition - essential for advanced pianists. A regular service is essential to keep the piano functioning well.

Please note: This includes vacuuming inside the piano, lubrication of moving parts, correcting misalignment in the action and cleaning the keys and casing.

Pitch Raise

If your piano sounding a little flat, a pitch raise is needed.

Pianos are continuously losing tension in their strings. Pianos that have not been tuned in a while, or is in an environment with a changing temperature or moisture level, will lose tension and sound flat - the tension must be added back through a pitch raise. This requires two “passes” over all 240 strings, a pitch raise must be followed up with a fine tune.

from £80 additional fee

Please note: A pitch raise is the essential first step when a piano has drifted significantly flat. It involves a full pass across all strings to restore tension — but because the strings interact as they're tightened, it cannot achieve a fine tuning on its own. A fine tune must follow, usually in the same visit.

The pitch raise and fine tune are therefore booked and priced together: from £180 for both. Please contact me if you're unsure whether your piano needs a pitch raise — I'm happy to advise.
